In a tug-of-war between two athletes, each pulls on the rope with a force of 240 N. What is the tension in the rope?

If the rope doesn't move, what horizontal force does each athlete exert against the ground?

The tension in the rope has to be 240 N. (Newton's 3rd Law)

If the rope does not move (ie accelerate), the net force on each person must be zero. The only way this is possible is to apply 240 N to the ground to balance the 240 N in the rope.
