I assume you meant they have the same amount of money in the beginning.

 

Cathy and Josie have

x = amount of money

 

Use the values you have for Josie

x - (1/2)x = 35

(1/2)x = 35

x = 70

 

Cathy spent 4/5 of 70 which is 56

70 - 56 = 14

Cathy has $14 left.
