A small medium and large chicken are weighing themselves the large and medium weigh 35 lbs the large and small weigh 29 lbs and the small and medium chicken weigh 20 lbs what does each chicken weigh

M+L = 35 lbs

S+L = 29 lbs

S+M = 20 lbs

 

(M+L)+(S+L)+(S+M) = 35+29+20 = 84 

 

Since the simplified equation is 2S+2M+2L, divide by 2 to find total weight: 84/2 = 42

 

L = total weight-(S+M)

 

S+M = 20, so L = 42-20 = 22

 

M+22 = 35, so M = 35-22 = 13

 

S+13 = 20, so S = 20-13 = 7

 

Small = 7 lbs

Medium = 13 lbs

Large = 22 lbs

Let s  = weight of the small chicken

     m = weight of the medium chicken

     l   = weight of the large chicken

 

and then we have 3 given equations:

 

(1)  l + m = 35

(2)  l + s = 29

(3)  s + m = 20

 

Subtracting equation (2) from (1), we get:

l + m - (l + s) = 35 - 29

or m - s = 6  let's call this equation (4)

 

since m + s = 20 from equation (3)

m + s + (m - s) = 20 + 6 , adding equations (3) and (4)

or 2m = 26

so m = 13 lbs

 

s + 13 = 20, plugging m into equation (3)

so s = 7 lbs

 

l + 7 = 29 , plugging s into equation (2)

so l = 22 lbs
