9 x 106: It is like you are multiply 9 by 10 six times. 9x10x10x10x10x10x10 = 9,000,000
All you have to do is move the decimal to the right six times. If there is no decimal, it is understood to be sitting behind the 9.
If the exponent is negative, it is the same as dividing by 10 since 10-1 = 1/10. In this case, move the decimal to the left the number of times indicated by the exponent. Fill in zeros if you need to.
