1. In the given reaction, the stoichiometry shows that 8 moles of HNO3 produces 4 moles of H2O.
2. Determine the number of moles in 191.8 g of HNO3 using the molar mass values in the table:
molar mass HNO3 = 1 + 14 + (3)(16) = 63 g HNO3 / mole HNO3
∴ moles of HNO3 = (191.8 g HNO3 ) / (63 g HNO3 / mole HNO3) ≈ 3 moles HNO3
3. Apply the relationship from step 1 and the answer to step 2 to determine the moles of H2O:
8 moles HNO3 / 4 moles H2O = 3 moles HNO3 / M moles H2O
∴ M = 12/8 = 1.5
