3(x - 2) + 5x = 10
First, distribute the 3 into each term inside the parentheses:
(3·x - 3·2) + 5x = 10
3x - 6 + 5x = 10
Combine the like terms on the left hand side of the equation:
3x - 6 + 5x = 10
8x - 6 = 10
Add 6 to both sides of the equation to isolate the term that contains the unknown variable (x):
8x - 6 = 10
+ 6 + 6
_________________
8x - 6 + 6 = 10 + 6
8x = 16
Divide both sides of the equation by 8 to solve for x:
8x = 16
8x/8 = 16/8
1x = 2 ==> x = 2
