A coffee distributor needs to mix a(n) Costa Rican coffee blend that normally sells for $8.90 per pound with a Breakfast coffee blend that normally sells for $15.00 per pound to create 70 pounds of a coffee that can sell for $11.08 per pound. How many pounds of each kind of coffee should they mix?

Answer 1

You need a total of 70 pounds so one type of coffee is X pounds and the other type is 70 - X.  You know how much each goes for by pound so sum that and set it equal to the total of 70 pounds and how much you sold it for.

 

8.90(X) + 15.00(70-X) = 11.08 * 70

 

8.9X + 1050 - 15X = 775.6

 

-6.1X = -274.4

 

X = 44.98 pounds

 

70 - X = 25.02 pounds

 

Check it

 

44.98(8.9) + 25.02(15) = 400.32 + 375.30 = 775.62 / 11.08 = 70 pounds  (2 cent rounding but otherwise ok)
