A bicycle with a 24-inch wheel (diameter) travels a distance of 1000 feet. How many revolutions does the wheel make (to the nearest revolution)?

24 inches = 2 feet

 

Each time the wheel rotates one complete revolution, the distance traveled by the bicycle is the circumference of the wheel.  

 

Circumference = π(diameter) = 2π feet

 

Number of revolutions completed in 1000 feet =

 

                   (1000 ft ) ÷ (2π feet/revolution) = 500/π revolutions

 

                                                                              ≈ 159 revolutions
