Americium-241 is an alpha emitter:
24195Am → 23793Np + 42He
How to get there without looking anything up
An alpha particle is a helium-4 nucleus, 42He — two protons and two neutrons. Emitting one costs the parent:
• 4 from the mass number: 241 − 4 = 237
• 2 from the atomic number: 95 − 2 = 93
Element 93 is neptunium, so the daughter is Np-237. You look up the symbol on the periodic table, but the numbers come from conservation alone.
Always balance both rows
Mass numbers (top): 241 = 237 + 4 ✓
Atomic numbers (bottom): 95 = 93 + 2 ✓
Every nuclear equation must balance in both, and checking takes two seconds. If your top row balances but the bottom does not, you have the wrong element symbol.
Why alpha decay for this nucleus
Heavy nuclei above roughly Z = 83 are too large for the strong force to hold against proton–proton repulsion, and shedding an alpha particle is an efficient way to drop both mass and charge at once. Essentially every actinide does this. The half-life here is 432.2 years.
The decay also emits a 59.5 keV gamma ray as the neptunium nucleus settles from an excited state to its ground state — sometimes written as a separate step:
23793Np* → 23793Np + γ
Gamma emission changes neither the mass number nor the atomic number, which is why it is often left out of the main equation.
If your question meant how Am-241 is produced, that is a beta decay instead:
24194Pu → 24195Am + 0−1e
Here the mass number is unchanged and the atomic number rises by one, because a neutron converts to a proton. That is the signature difference: alpha changes both numbers, beta-minus changes only the charge.
Where you have met this isotope: Am-241 is the source in ionisation-type smoke detectors. Its alpha particles ionise the air in a small chamber, letting a current flow; smoke particles absorb the alphas, the current drops, and the alarm sounds. About 0.3 micrograms per detector — and alphas are stopped by a sheet of paper, so it is safe while the housing is intact.
