Categorical variables - what to do when assumption of independence is violated?

What SPSS test should I run if I want to know whether two categorical variables are related, but the assumption of independence is violated? I have observational data on animal behavior and would like to know whether individuals were more likely to socially groom if they also played. Thanks!

You can determine a chi square test to see whether there is a significant difference between the two groups.
