asked 07/17/22How to break down the math for solving problems concerning equilibrium and partial pressure
2.76=(x)(x)/(0.04-2x)2 , the answer found was 0.0292, how was this found step by step?
1 Expert Answer
This equation, if it is correct, can be expressed as a quadratic:
Multiply both sides by denominator
2.76(.04-2x)2 = x2
Multiply out and distribute constant term:
.004416 - .4416x + 11.04x2 -x2 = 0
.10.04x2 - .4416x +.004416 = 0
Use quadratic formula: x = .0286 or .0154 (The second answer would be chosen)
The answer quoted doesn't make sense with respect to the K expression as this would mean that the extent of reaction was more than the initial amount of reactant.
