Question

The formula of most common monosaccharide glucose is C6H12O6, then why do the resulting disaccharide have the formula C12H22O11 rather than C12H24O12?

The linking of two sugar monomers together via a glycosidic linkage is done by dehydration synthesis. In other words, the linkage between two sugar monomers to form a disaccharide removes a molecule of water as a byproduct of the reaction.
