Of 26 total students 12 are girls, G=12
14 are boys B=14
Let's say 4 girls play basketball and 6 boys play basketball
then the Venn Diagram is
A rectangle with 2 non-overlapping circles, inside the rectangle, one for B the other for G
outside the two circles and inside the rectangle are non-students
draw a 3rd circle which overlaps both B and G circles
it overlaps the B circle with 6 students, and overlaps the G circles with 4 students.
the rest of the 3rd circle is the number of non-students who play basketball
A total of 10 play basketball, a total of 26-10 = 16 do not play basketball which is the sum of the parts of B and G circles that do not overlap the 3rd circle.
More generally, let b = the number of Boys who play basketball and g = the number of Girls who play basketball, then the number of students who do not play basketball = 26-b-g, which is the sum of the two parts of B and G circles that do not overlap with the 3rd circle
