cost of one pencil and one pen = about $1.82
let x= cost of a pencil and y = cost of a pen
3x+4y = 6.5
2x= .5+y
3x = .75 +1.5y
.75 +1.5y +4y = 6.5
5.5y = 5.75
11y = 115
y = 115/110 = 23/22 = $1 and 1/22 of a dollar = about $1.05
x = .25+y/2 = 1/4 + 1/2+1/44 = (11+22+1)/44 = 34/44 = 17/22 of a dollar = about 77 cents
check the answer
3x+4y = 51/22 + 4 +4/11 = 4+5/2 = 6.5
2x = 1/2 +y
34/22 = 1/2 +23/22 =11/22 +23/22 = 34/22
3(.77) + 4(1.05 = 2.31+4.20 = 6.51
2(.77) = 1.54 = .5+1.05 = 1.55 very close
cost of a pencil and a pen = about 1.05 + .77 = about $1.82
or exactly $1 and 9/11 part of a dollar
