Question

A rowing team rowing with the current traveled 40 km in2 h. Rowing against the current, the team could travel only 16 km in 2 h. Find the team's rowing rate in calm water and the rate of the current.

v = rowling rate in calm water

u = current flow rate

v+u = 40/2 = 20 ......(1)

v-u = 16/2 = 8 ......(2)

(1)+(2): 2v = 28

v = 14 km/hr

u = 20-v = 6 km/hr
