take an example:
x^2 > 9
solve x^2 = 9 to get x = + or -sqr9 = +3 and -3
that means intervals of - infinity to -3, -3 to +3 and +3 to + infinity
which intervals are the solutions to the inequality?
x<-3 and x>+3
