When it is bonded with a metal. H is usually +1 Ox St. when reacted with a non-metal, but it acts like a non-metal in the face of a metal which always has an Ox St > 0 when reacted.

So Trinity, you can solve this one by thinking hard about it. For H to take oxidation number of -1, that means something else would have to strongly take an oxidation number of probably +1, to balance formal charges in a neutral molecule. What element(s) strongly take an oxidation number of +1 ? -- Cheers, --Mr. d.02/01/22
