Hydrogen can have an oxidation number of –1 when _______.

A. it is grouped in molecules with three or more atoms

C. it is grouped with just one other atom that is a metal

D. it is grouped with just one other atom that is a non-metal

E. None of the Above

So Trinity, you can solve this one by thinking hard about it. For H to take oxidation number of -1, that means something else would have to strongly take an oxidation number of probably +1, to balance formal charges in a neutral molecule. What element(s) strongly take an oxidation number of +1 ? -- Cheers, --Mr. d.
