is it ok for organisations to pass your data on to other organisations if they ask for your permission first

This is a great question for an ethics class, and many companies who rely on data mining/sharing don't want to make it easy to ask for your permission. IMHO the answer is "yes", as long as the language for requesting permission is visible and easy to understand and presented as opt-in rather than opt-out.
