Ridge to Reef is a relatively new paradigm being employed by ecosystem managers to protect, and conserve the natural resources and ecological services, mainly in Tropical Coastal and Marine ecosystems.
It uses a holistic and integrated approach to ecosystem management that recognizes the interconnectedness of all systems within the region.
Managers who employ this methodology consider not only the condition of the reef proper but also the rivers and waterways that empty into the marine environment, the lands (beach, coastal terrain, lowlands, uplands, hills, and mountains associated within the coastal/near coastal area).
Also considered are other associated and integrated marine environments (seagrass beds, mangrove forests, etc.).
All of these systems and areas are interrelated. An impact on one also affects the rest. That’s how nature works.
Rather than just managing fisheries activities, things like forestry practices, river/stream pollution/sediment loads, agricultural practices, runoff, etc. are all part of the R2R equation.
Both Spatial and Temporal factors are considered in planning.
This method of ecosystem management does not exclude human activity. In fact, humans are considered part of the ecosystem.
