Which of the following solutions has the highest pH?
A. 5.61 x 10-4 M H2SO4
B. 2.57 x 10-4 M Al(OH)3
C. 3.04 x 10-3 M HNO3
D. 1.11 x 10-3 M Ca(OH)2
Highest pH = most basic = greater [OH-]
H2SO4 is a strong acid. very low [OH-], very high [H3O^+]
Al(OH)3 is a weak base. It will not significantly increase [OH-] in water.
HNO3 is a strong acid. It will have a very low [OH-] and very high [H3O+].
Ca(OH)2 is a strong base. Therefore it will greatly increase [OH-] in water to have the highest pH, lowest pOH, greatest [OH-], and smallest [H3O+].
