Faith begins with faith in Jesus as the Son of God, second person of the Trinity, Divine Logos of all creation. Theology is defined by St. Thomas Aquinas as "faith seeking understanding". Salvation is attained by God's judgment after our death. The understanding of what faith entails can be found in the Catechism, particularly the Catechism of the Council of Trent (1566). While we are the faithful children of God on earth, we seek to maintain ourselves in a state of grace by obedience to those official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. in the Catechism. Sanctity may also be attained by a continuous seeking of God through devotion to both discursive and contemplative prayer and spiritual and corporal works of mercy. One must confront the fact that those who intend to serve God are met with confrontation in the mystery of iniquity. All men are drawn away by the "Spirit of the World" that must be resisted though a lifetime. Then again, all believers are obliged in life to seek what is God's will for their chosen vocation of work in the world. This requires a personal knowledge and the hard work of personal cultivation of virtue. The great irony of all believers is that as they "deny themselves and take up their cross" (Matthew 16:24) they will discover the richness, peace and joy of life therein!
