Problem 2: What is the complete rate law equation for the overall reaction described by the elementary equations seen below. Assume that the rate constant for the overall reaction is 1400 mol L-1 min-1. Explain (using only words) how you would use the elementary reactions to create the equation without doing any math.

Your first reaction is wonky. If the overall reaction is CHCl3 + Cl2 --> CCl4 + HCl , you only need the two later reactions added. If so, only the slow reaction matters if there is sufficient Cl2 . In that case the overall rate constant will depend on k2PCHCl3PCl2 and not with the square of chlorine partial pressure as might be expected from the overall reaction.
