In my opinion, it would depend heavily on both the author and the context of the word itself. What I believe you are describing, under certain circumstances, might be intended as a pun or ellipsis. Sort of how someone might use a homonym to do two things at once in an English sentence, a Roman author might do so for humor or rhetorical effect, like in a bawdy poem or in a political speech.
