Hi Emily,
First write the balanced equation:
2 HI (aq) + ZnCO3 (s) → ZnI2 (aq) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g)
*to find the states of matter refer to a solubility chart
Now separate only the aqueous (aq) into ions
2 H+ (aq) + 2 I- (aq) + ZnCO3 (s) → Zn+2 (aq) + 2 I- (aq) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g)
Cross off the aq ions that are same on both sides
Net ionic equation:
2 H+ (aq) + ZnCO3 (s) → Zn+2 (aq) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g)
Hope this helps :)
