What are these letters doing in my equations? Here comes algebra!
Ye be 66, and here be why:
Start at the end. A "score" is 20, so six score plus 10 = 130.
From 130, subtract "3 times 3." 130 - 9 = 121
Your age, plus half that age, plus a third that age, is 121
a + 1/2a + 1/3a = 121
Get rid of the fractions by multiplying the whole equation by their common denominator of 6:
6a + 3a + 2a = 726, or, 11a = 726
divide by 11 to get a = 66
half of 66 is 33
1/3 of 66 is 22
3 x 3 is 9
66 + 33 + 22 + 9 = 130, which = "6 score and 10."
So ye'd be 66, lad!
Hope this helps!
Matt
