The boxed answers are correct. The main idea with pH is that it represents a "concentration" of how many H+ ions in a solution.
We use water as a reverence, and it's pH (log of the concentration of H+ ions) yields 7. Water is neither basic or acidic. So 7 is the "middle".
What you want to remember is that the lower the pH, the more acidic a solution is, whereas the higher a pH the more basic a solution is.
With that rule of thumb we find:
1 = very acidic
4 = slightly acidic
7 = neither
10 = slightly basic
13 = highly basic
