Well, when I Google the definition of "matter" I get the following first definition:
1.
physical substance in general, as distinct from mind and spirit; (in physics) that which occupies space and possesses rest mass, especially as distinct from energy
Maybe once we figure out what dark matter is we will have to revise that definition, but for now it seems that matter is defined as necessarily having mass and taking up space.
