Miles per hour is the same as miles/hours. He can jog 17/5 miles in 7/8 hours. So that's the same as (17/5)/(7/8) = x (Placing "x" for the unknown mph)
To divide fractions just multiply the first fractions by the RECIPROCAL of the second fraction:
17/5 x 8/7 = 136/35 or about 3.88mph
You can check your answer by taking 3.4 miles divided by 3.88mph and you should get how many hours it takes him to jog 3.4 miles (7/8).
Remember: mph is miles divided by hours
So, miles/hours = miles/hours is always your equation.
For either side of this equation you can plug in the mph.
For the other side you plug in the miles and the hours.
Use x for whatever the unknown is. In this case it was the mph. But, if they gave you 3.88 mph and that he jogged 3.4 miles, then you would place "x" for hours in the equation like this: 3.4/x = 3.88
