There are so many good possible answers to this question. I think that is why this book is considered a classic: it just covers so much!

I would say, if you have to pick one of the top three answers, it would be unrequited love. However, none of the above also works as a suggestion. I would add to the other answers that the theme is not just "The American Dream", but how this dream is actually unattainable.

I think the important thing to remember is whatever you choose as the main theme for this great work of American Literature, make sure you can support your answers with examples from the text.
