Six apples and three oranges cost $3.36. Two apples and five oranges cost $3.04. Find the cost of one apple and the cost of an orange.

I need the two equations and the cost of both fruits. I also want to see how you solve it.

Helen L.

Thank you! Can I see this in an addition method?

Mo's answer is essentially an addition method (except he subtracted instead of adding).  If you wanted to add instead of subtract then instead of multiplying equation 2 by 3 you would multiply by (-3).

The other commonly used method to solve 2 equations in 2 variables is called substitution.  In this method you would solve one of the equations for one of the variables (for example, A = (3.04 - 5O) / 2) and then plug in (or substitute) this value for A in the other equation that you can solve for O.
