Question

Design a V belt to transmit 8.5 kW power from a pulley rotating at 1500 rpm to a fan pulley to rotate at 500 rpm (neglecting slip). The fan is to be used for 24 hours a day and space does not permit to have center distance more than 1,100 mm. Select V belt and give details of your calculations.

For this problem I referenced the Machinery’s Handbook 27^th Edition, “V-Belts” starting on page 2393 and a bit of Shigley’s Mechanical Engineering Design, Eighth Edition ISBN: 0−390−76487−6, Chapter 17. Anyone else taking a machine design course or doing any design should get a copy of the Machinery’s Handbook. Mechanical Engineering is very empirical, and having a book with reliable references is key.
