My car won't start...

I have a 2006 Sebring, and have been having problems when trying to start it.and it seems like only when its cold outside.like at 5:00am.it will start and then shut off ,about 2or 3 times.then the 4th time it does nothing,no crank at all.this morning.but when it does start around the 5 or 6 try it runs fine all the way to work and all day. till next cold spell night or am. Last two times banged steering column on ignition and tried and it started.the key has a chip in it.so is it possible what ever reads the key is going bad?transponder or what ever its called? thanks for any help in this matter.

It sounds as if you should have your battery checked.  That's always a good place to start.  And by all means, if your key has a chip in it, get a new key.
