asked 06/22/21What is the surface area ?
A rectangular box with a square base has length 16 in and has no topDetermine its the has height 32 in.. How does the formula change if the box has no top ?

The general surface area of a rectangular box is, S = 2( hw + Lw + hL) where h is the height = 32 in, and since this a square base box L = length = w = width = 16 in. with the box has no top then there is only one Lw and the formula changes to = 2( hw + hL) + Lw = 2[(32)(16)+(32)(16)]+(16)(16) =
2( 1024)+256 = 2304 in2
Another method to solve this is to recognize that the box has four sides and one bottom, the surface area of the base is a square = (16in)2 = 256 in2
The surface area of each of the sides is (16in)(32in) = 512 in2, The total surface are of the box with no top
= 256 in2+ 4( 512in2) = 256 in2 + 2048 in2 = 2304 in2

Hey Zam, I just wrote a solution to one of the other surface area questions you asked. The process is practically identical. All you have to do is find the area of each side of the box and add them up. The only thing that's different about this question is that the top is missing (aka there's one less side to add). Hope this helps!06/22/21
