Good afternoon, Kayla.
When given [H3O+] = 5.3 x 10-5M, you will need to calculate the opposite log of 5.3 x 10-5. As long as your calculator has a "log" key, this is quite easy.
-log(5.3 x 10-5) = 4.28
The pH = 4.28. The solution is acidic because the pH is less than 7.00
In the second problem, you can calculate the opposite log of the [OH-]. That will give you the pOH. Then because pH + pOH = 14, you can easily calculate the pH.
-log(6.6 x 10-3) = 2.18
The pOH is 2.18.
14.00 - 2.18 = 11.82
The pH is 11.82. The solution is basic because the pH is greater than 7.00
