Given that a ≠ b and that a (x + b) = bx − c, we get the following:
ax + ab = bx - c
ax + ab - bx = - c
ax - bx = -ab - c
-bx + ax = -ab - c
+bx - ax = +ab + c
x (b - a) = ab + c
Now, note that since a ≠ b, then 0 ≠ b - a,
so we can divide by b - a without any
problems, so now we get:
x = (ab + c) / (b - a).
