Passionate ASL Teacher w/ 15 Years of Experience
I have been signing for almost 20 years. Learning any language takes time and dedication. I began learning ASL at a local Deaf school when I was a senior in high school. But it was through immersion at Gallaudet University, the only Deaf University in the world, that I really thrived in my ASL development. If you don’t have the opportunity to immerse yourself daily in a language you can still achieve fluency. It just may take more time. I encourage students to meet other Deaf people and practice with them. Classes are good for learning grammar, vocabulary, and about culture but it is through using the language in a natural setting that you really gain confidence and fluency in a language. Keep practicing!
