Pure water at ambient temperature has an equilibrium coefficient for [H+] and [OH-] of 1x10-14. If the concentrations are equal, at 1x10-7 each, the solution is neutral. The negative log of 1x10-7 is 7. pH and pOH are both 7 at this point.
This makes a convenient system for calculating the pOH once you know the pH: pH + pOH = 14.
14 - 7.44 = 6.56
pOH = 6.56
