Are we a nation of equality for all or a nation of individual liberty? How do these two concepts clash with the ideas of liberty or equality or order?

The suggestion that equality and individual liberty clash is absurd. The United States is founded on the Enlightenment philosophy that all persons are born equal with the same natural rights that include life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. How an individual exercises his/her rights is the responsibility of the individual, which means that there is no entitlement to being happy. But liberty does not mean that the individual may do anything he or she wishes. The exercise of liberty must be within the law; otherwise there is anarchy and no liberty because liberty can only be preserved through the establishment of government. There is no redress, though, for an individual who makes poor decisions of any kind. Equity is not equality. Equity, as defined today by institutions, attempts to shape outcomes of all kinds at the expense of equality and liberty. For example, if a group of people want to chose the membership of an organization and their choices do not reflect the equitable proportion of the pool from which they chose, then the exercise of their liberty to chose is seen as unfair.
