Loudness corresponds to Intensity. I= Po/4pir2 . I(4)=Po/64pi where Po = power at the source (r=0) and r=distance from the source. So, I(4+d)=Po/64pi/8 requires that (4+d)2=8*16, thus d=7.31m.

From a distance of 4.0 m, a bystander listens to a jackhammer breaking concrete. How far would he need to move from the jackhammer so that its perceived loudness decreases by a factor of 8? TIA!
