In 2018, the IPCC found that we had until 2030 to seriously correct our actions to prevent the Earth from warming over 1.5C. Coming from the world's top climate scientists, this should be a grave warning to our Government. Ideally, the government needs to divest from fossil fuels and invest in renewable and nuclear energy. Some say this will kill jobs, but that it just not true. There will be employment in the new energy industries that do not kill the planet. Additionally, the Government ought to incentivize individual actions that are sustainable. For example, the tax credit on electric car ownership is a fantastic start, and I believe similar tax credits should be created for recycling, composting, et cetera. Another industry that the ought to be regulated is agriculture. Factory farming is a major source of air and water pollution and deforestation. If farming were more localized and sustainable, it would be better for the environment and healthier for our diets.
The Government can and should take all of these actions on a domestic front, but the job does not stop there. China is, by far, the top polluter. Other countries like India, Russia, and Japan join the United States and China in rounding out the top 5 global polluters. The truth is these actions domestically are necessary, but not enough own its own. All of these countries, the entire world actually, needs to come together and address the reality of climate change, create more sustainable practices. Otherwise, the next few decades will be a bumpy ride. I believe the best course of action is for the Government to lead by example; the US is the most influential country in the world and if we correct our ways, the rest of the world will eventually follow.
