That’s a great question. As a coach, I usually recommend 1.e4 for players who want to improve their understanding of chess.
1.e4 often leads to open positions, which makes it easier to learn basic principles such as development, controlling the center, and active piece play.
You will also meet many classic openings like the Italian Game, the Spanish, the French, and the Caro-Kann. This gives very useful experience.
1.d4 is also a very strong move, but it usually leads to more closed and strategic positions.
Both are good. It depends on your style, but for improving players, 1.e4 is a great way to start.
