Why isn't the length of a rectangle a function of the area of a rectangle?

the standard formula is A=LW where A=area, L=length, and W=width and Area is a function of Length and Width. A(L,W) = LW

but you can rewrite it, solving for L

L=A/W

L(A,W) = (1/W)A where length is a function of Area and Width
