When a questions asks us what is 8a if a=2, that means that we have to rewrite 8a but INSTEAD of a we put 2.
Also, we need to know that there is a hidden "multiply" between 8 and "a", because mathematicians are lazy to put "·" between 8 and "a" :P
So, that's actually 8 times a. That means, that when we put 2 instead of a, we actually have 8 times 2, or 8·2 which equals 16!
8a if a =2
8a= 8·2=16
x/7 if x = 21
instead of x, we insert 21, and then divide 21 by 7 which is 3
x/7=21/7=3
2x + 9 if x = 5
instead of x, we insert 5, and then multiply 2 by 5 which is 10, and then add 9 to it
2x+9= 2·5+9= 10+9= 19
4x - 2 if x = 3
instead of x, we insert 3, then multiply 4 by 3 which is 12, and then deduct 2
4x-2= 4·3 -2= 12-2 = 10
What is the coefficient in 2a + 3
- coefficient is another word for a number that multiplies a letter (a variable), in this case it is a number 2 that stands next to, and multiplies, the variable "a"
a.2 is the answer!
b.a
c. 3
d.2a
What is the constant in 2a + 3
- constant is another word for a number that stands by itself and is not multiplied or divided by any variable (a letter), so in this case that is number 3
a.2
b. a
c.2a
d. 3 is the correct answer!
