Finding the measure of supplementary angles

Question

Two angles are supplementary if their sum in 180°. The larger angle measures eight degrees more than three times the measure of a smaller angle. If x represents the measure of the smaller angle and these two angles are supplementary, find the measure of each angle.

smaller angle = x

larger angle = 3x + 8

 

x + 3x + 8 = 180

4x + 8 = 180

4x = 172

x = 43

 

The smaller angle measures 43 degrees.

The larger angle measures 137 degrees.

 

When you add up these measurements, they add up to 180 degrees.
