A house has two rooms of equal area. One room is square and the other room is a rectangle 4 ft narrower and 5 ft longer than the square one. Find the area of each room.

Let S = square side

Let W = rectangle width

Let L = rectangle length

 

W = S - 4

L = S + 5

 

S^2 = L*W = (S-4)*(S+5) = S^2 + S - 20

S = 20

 

The area of the square room is 20*20 = 400 sq. ft

The area of the rectangular room is 16*25 = 400 sq. ft
