Chemistry structure of solids assessment question

The figure presents a particle diagram of a solid consisting of shaded circles, which represent negative ions, and smaller unshaded circles, which represent positive ions. The circles are organized in 5 rows and 5 columns, with negative ions and positive ions alternating. Ions that are adjacent are touching. The diagram shows a third dimension in the arrangement of ions. Another layer of negative ions is partly obscured by the positive ions.

The figure presents a particulate-level diagram containing two types of particles: large white particles and small grey particles. The large white particles are arranged in a square lattice. The small grey particles are located throughout this lattice, at every other intersection of four large white particles.

  1. Label the diagram(s).
  2. Add to the diagrams. Add parts to the picture, sample data & sample calculations if appropriate.
  3. Draw and label a follow-up diagram.
  4. What big ideas can be illustrated using my “starter?”
  5. Write a narrative or description of what you see in the diagrams.
  6. Consider these to be open-ended
  7. Explain what information is seen and how it works
