1. The daily recommended intake of calcium for adolescent females is approximately 1.10 g. 

 

a)   One supplement tablet contains 0.950 g of calcium carbonate. How many tablets would an adolescent female have to consume to meet her requirements? [2]

b)  Each tablet of calcium citrate contains 4.57 X 10-3 mol calcium citrate. How many tablets would an adolescent female have to take to meet her requirements? [2]

1. 1 tablet contains 0.950 g of calcium carbonate
2. The daily intake of calcium ( Ca) = 1.10 g

Mwt of calcium carbonate ( CaCO₃) = 100

Atomic mass of calcium ( Ca) = 40 % composition of Ca in CaCO₃ = 40%

Amount of calcium (Ca) in one tablet = (40 x 0.950)/100 = 0.380 g

No of tablets to meet the daily intake = 1.10/0.380= 2.89 tablets

Answer: 3 tablets
