1) This is a physical science question, not a chemisty issue
2) The rate of pressure decrease with altitude differs (is less than that) for the hot air vs. the corresponding rate for the surrounding cooler air. As a result, the air outside the lower edge of the balloon exerts more force than does the air inside; and the air inside the upper edge of the balloon exerts more force than the air outside. Both of these imbalances generate positive upward net force, we term this effect "bouyancy". Same thing for balloons filled with 'lighter' gases, such as helium.
