A jet travels 2995 miles against a jet stream in 5 hours and 3445 miles with the jet stream in the same amount of time. What is the rate of the jet in still air and what is the rate of the jet stream?
Distance = (rate)(time); where X = plane speed and JS = jet stream speed
- 2995 = (X-JS)(5); X = (2995 + 5JS)/5 plug this X equation into the equation below for X
- 3445 = (X+JS)(5)
- 3445 = ((2995 + 5JS)/5) + JS)(5)
- (3445 - 2995)/10 = 10(JS)/10; JS = 45 mph plug this into either equation to solve for X
- 2995 = (X-45)(5)
- X = 644 mph
- check into other equation:
- 3445 = (644+45)(5) check!
