30+ years of teaching Judaic studies.
Being raised Jewish, but not Orthodox, I was taught to keep a Kosher kitchen and that Friday Nights were a family night. To this day, we feel strongly about keeping Kosher at home because, due to our family's struggles to remain Jewish throughout the Holocaust and the Spanish Inquisition, we recognize that being able to keep a Kosher kitchen is a privilege, and therefore, it's a way to honor those of us who were denied the ability.
Friday night is Kabbalat Shabbat, so even if we were invited to go to someone's house, we still lit candles, had Kiddush, ate Challah and had Shabbat dinner together. It was a rare exception that we were "allowed" to miss Shabbat. I raised my kids the same way.
I'd like to think that it has instilled a pride and focus on family and home for my kids the way it shaped my take on things.
